يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ نَجَسٌ فَلَا يَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلْمَسْجِدَ ٱلْحَرَامَ بَعْدَ عَامِهِمْ هَـٰذَا ۚ وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ عَيْلَةً فَسَوْفَ يُغْنِيكُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦٓ إِن شَآءَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ
Yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanooo innamal mushrikoona najasun falaa yaqrabul Masjidal Haraama ba'da 'aamihim haaza; wa in khiftum 'ailatan fasawfa yughnee kumul laahu min fadliheee in shaaa'; innallaaha 'Aleemun hakeem
مومنو! مشرک تو پلید ہیں تو اس برس کے بعد وہ خانہٴ کعبہ کا پاس نہ جانے پائیں اور اگر تم کو مفلسی کا خوف ہو تو خدا چاہے گا تو تم کو اپنے فضل سے غنی کر دے گا۔ بےشک خدا سب کچھ جانتا (اور) حکمت والا ہے
O you who believe, those who associate others with God are truly unclean, so let them not approach the Sacred Mosque after this year of theirs. And if you fear poverty, God will enrich you from his bounty, if he wills. Indeed, God is all-knowing, all-wise.
The declaration came in the ninth year after the migration, and its second half answers the fear its first half raised: Mecca's economy ran on the pilgrimage caravans, and the merchants of the city stood to lose their season. Commentators divided over the word najas, some reading it as a bodily condition and others as a description of the state of associating partners with God, and the tradition never settled on one voice.
