Surah Al-Anfal — 8:40

Wa in tawallaw fa'lamooo annal laaha mawlaakum; ni'mal mawlaa wa ni'man naseer

And if they turn away, know that God is your protector — the best of protectors, the best of helpers.

Reflection

This verse asks for knowledge, and it lands at the point where what the other side does has passed out of the community's hands. Mawlā names the party bound to you in a tie of protection, and Arabic runs the word in both directions, for the one who shelters and the one sheltered, so the choice of it here places the community on the dependent side. The two verses before it twice hold open the option of desisting, which is what makes turning away the remaining case.
