Reflection

Maʾāb comes from the verb for returning, so what is named is a place a person comes back to, the destination that matches the direction already taken. The word for those who arrive there is built on the verb for water overflowing its banks, used of the flood in surah al-Ḥāqqa. Beside the ambush image in the line before, jahannam is given two qualities at once: it waits, and it is come home to.
