لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ
Liman shaaa'a minkum any yataqaddama aw yata akhkhar
جو تم میں سے آگے بڑھنا چاہے یا پیچھے رہنا چاہے
to whoever among you wills to go forward or to hold back.
Human choice is put here as plainly as the Qur'an ever puts it, and put to everyone the warning reaches. The two verbs are physical ones, to step forward or to hang back, and not the usual vocabulary of belief and denial, so the decision looks like something done with the body. The accounting that gives the step its weight follows in the very next line.
