Surah Al-Ma'idah — 5:39

Faman taaba mim ba'di zulmihee wa aslaha fa innal laaha yatoobu 'alaih; innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem

But whoever repents after their wrongdoing and sets things right — God will turn to them in mercy. Indeed, God is forgiving, merciful.

Reflection

Mercy arrives one line after the severest penalty in the surah, with nothing placed between them. Aṣlaḥa asks for repair that shows in conduct, so the turning described here is measured by what a person does afterwards. Jurists divided over whether repentance before capture lifts the worldly penalty as well, and this line does not close that question.
