Surah Fussilat — 41:25

Wa qaiyadnaa lahum quranaaa'a fazaiyanoo lahum maa baina aideehim wa maa khalfahum wa haqqa 'alaihimul qawlu feee umamin qad khalat min qablihim minal jinni wal insi innahum kaanoo khaasireen

And we assigned them companions who made what lay before them and what lay behind them seem fair to them, and the word came due upon them, as upon nations of jinn and humankind that had passed away before them. Indeed, they were the losers.

Reflection

The verb here means to fit one thing exactly to another, the way a matching part is supplied, so these companions are paired to a disposition already present rather than dropped in at random. What they make attractive covers both directions at once, the deeds already behind these people and whatever lies ahead, leaving no stretch of a life unflattered. The verses just before named an assumption about God as the thing that ruined them, and the companions are its outward match.
