۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُونُوا۟ قَوَّٰمِينَ بِٱلْقِسْطِ شُهَدَآءَ لِلَّهِ وَلَوْ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَوِ ٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ وَٱلْأَقْرَبِينَ ۚ إِن يَكُنْ غَنِيًّا أَوْ فَقِيرًا فَٱللَّهُ أَوْلَىٰ بِهِمَا ۖ فَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ أَن تَعْدِلُوا۟ ۚ وَإِن تَلْوُۥٓا۟ أَوْ تُعْرِضُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرًا
Yaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo koonoo qawwa ameena bilqisti shuhadaaa'a lillaahi wa law 'alaa anfusikum awil waalidaini wal aqrabeen iny yakun ghaniyyan aw faqeeran fallaahu awlaa bihimaa falaaa tattabi'ul hawaaa an ta'diloo; wa in talwooo aw tu'ridoo fa innal laaha kaana bimaa ta'maloona Khabeera
اے ایمان والو! انصاف پر قائم رہو اور خدا کے لئے سچی گواہی دو خواہ (اس میں) تمہارا یا تمہارےماں باپ اور رشتہ داروں کا نقصان ہی ہو۔ اگر کوئی امیر ہے یا فقیر تو خدا ان کا خیر خواہ ہے۔ تو تم خواہش نفس کے پیچھے چل کر عدل کو نہ چھوڑ دینا۔ اگر تم پیچیدا شہادت دو گے یا (شہادت سے) بچنا چاہو گے تو (جان رکھو) خدا تمہارے سب کاموں سے واقف ہے
You who believe, stand firm for justice as witnesses for God, even against yourselves, your parents, or your close kin. Whether the person is rich or poor, God is closer to them than you are. So do not follow your own desires away from justice. If you twist your testimony or turn away, God is fully aware of what you do.
This command reappears in 5:8 with its two halves reversed: the standing is for justice and the witnessing for God here, and the other way round there. Commentators take the pair as closing both directions in which testimony fails. The warning names wealth and poverty together, so pity is put under the same suspicion as deference, and qisṭ means an exact measured share, a narrower thing than fairness in general.
