Surah Luqman — 31:13

And when Luqman said to his son, counseling him: "My dear son, ascribe no partner to God — to ascribe partners to him is a tremendous wrong."

Reflection

Luqman is remembered as a sage given wisdom, and the first thing that wisdom produces in the surah is a word to his own child. The diminutive ya bunayya is tender address carrying the gravest warning, and zulm names a thing put where it does not belong. Two verses on, God's own voice limits obedience to parents at exactly this point, which quietly bounds the authority of the father speaking.
