Surah Ali 'Imran — 3:185

Kulu nafsin zaaa'iqatul mawt; wa innamaa tuwaffawna ujoorakum Yawmal Qiyaamati faman zuhziha 'anin Naari waudkhilal Jannata faqad faaz; wa mal hayaatud dunyaaa illaa mataa'ul ghuroor

Every soul will taste death. You will be paid your full reward only on the day of resurrection. Whoever is drawn away from the fire and admitted to the garden has truly triumphed. The life of this world is nothing but the enjoyment of illusion.

Reflection

Position matters here: the line sits in the section addressed to the community after Uhud, and the next verse promises further testing in wealth, in themselves, and in what they will have to hear. Zuḥziḥa carries the sense of being tugged just clear of something, a narrow margin rather than a wide one. Matā' is the ordinary word for trade goods a traveller carries, which sets the whole of this life at the value of what fits in a pack.
