Surah An-Nur — 24:19

Innal lazeena yuhibboona an tashee'al faahishatu fil lazeena aamanoo lahum 'azaabun aleemun fid dunyaa wal Aakhirah; wallaahu ya'lamu wa antum laa ta'lamoon

Those who love to see indecency spread among the believers will have a painful punishment in this world and the next. God knows, and you do not know.

Reflection

What the verse names is an appetite: loving to see a story travel. That puts the person who passes it on with relish inside the same sentence as whoever started it, and the punishment named reaches into this world as well as the next. The passage has already charged people with speaking about what they had no knowledge of, and it closes by setting God's knowledge against theirs — the same missing knowledge that made the talk feel harmless.
