۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَسْتَحْىِۦٓ أَن يَضْرِبَ مَثَلًا مَّا بَعُوضَةً فَمَا فَوْقَهَا ۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فَيَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ ٱلْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمْ ۖ وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَيَقُولُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۘ يُضِلُّ بِهِۦ كَثِيرًا وَيَهْدِى بِهِۦ كَثِيرًا ۚ وَمَا يُضِلُّ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ
Innal laaha laa yastahyeee ai yadriba masalam maa ba'oodatan famaa fawqahaa; faammal lazeena aamanoo faya'lamoona annahul haqqu mir rabbihim wa ammal lazeena kafaroo fayaqooloona maazaaa araadal laahu bihaazaa masalaa; yudillu bihee kaseeranw wa yahdee bihee kaseeraa; wa maa yudillu biheee illal faasiqeen
الله اس بات سے عار نہیں کرتا کہ مچھر یا اس سے بڑھ کر کسی چیز (مثلاً مکھی مکڑی وغیرہ) کی مثال بیان فرمائے۔ جو مومن ہیں، وہ یقین کرتے ہیں وہ ان کے پروردگار کی طرف سے سچ ہے اور جو کافر ہیں وہ کہتے ہیں کہ اس مثال سے خدا کی مراد ہی کیا ہے۔ اس سے (خدا) بہتوں کو گمراہ کرتا ہے اور بہتوں کو ہدایت بخشتا ہے اور گمراہ بھی کرتا تو نافرمانوں ہی کو
God is not ashamed to offer a parable — even of a gnat, or something smaller. Those who believe know it is the truth from their Lord. But those who deny ask, 'What does God mean by such a parable?' Through it he leads many astray, and through it he guides many. And he leads astray by it none but those who break faith —
Fawqaha is open in the Arabic, and commentators have taken it both ways: above the gnat in smallness, anything slighter still, or above it in size, anything larger. The word for gnat occurs nowhere else in the Qur'an, which suits a verse answering people who found such small images beneath a scripture. The reply it gives is that one parable guides many and loses many, so what the image does depends on who receives it.
