Surah Al-Isra — 17:47

nahnu a'lamu bimaa yastami'oona biheee iz yastami'oona ilaika wa iz hum najwaaa iz yaqooluz zaalimoona in tattabi'oona illaa rajulam mas hooraa

We know best what they listen for when they listen to you, and when they confer in secret — when the wrongdoers say, "You are following nothing but a man bewitched."

Reflection

The accusation is placed inside a private conversation and then quoted back, so the reply to secrecy is that it was overheard. Masḥūr has two readings in the tradition: one under a spell, or, from another sense of the root, a creature with lungs who eats and drinks like anyone else, which turns the charge into a denial that a human being could carry revelation. The line after calls these attempts at comparison and says they lead nowhere.
