Surah Yusuf — 12:109

Wa maaa arsalnaa min qablika illaa rijaalan nooheee ilaihim min ahlil quraa; afalam yaseeroo fil ardi fa yanzuroo kaifa kaana 'aaqibatul lazeena min qablihim; wa la Daarul Aakhirati Khairul lillazeenat taqaw; afalaa ta'qiloon

And we sent none before you but men to whom we revealed, from the people of the towns. Have they not traveled through the land and seen how those before them ended? The home of the hereafter is better for those who are mindful of God. Will you not reason?

Reflection

Two answers to a single objection close Yusuf's surah. Messengers were men receiving revelation, the reply also given at 16:43 and 21:7, and they were drawn from settled towns; surah 7 attaches that identical phrase three times over to communities that were wiped out. The call to travel and look at how earlier peoples ended therefore points at ruins of the same kind of town such messengers came from.
