Surah Hud — 11:5

Alaa innahum yasnoona sudoorahum liyastakhfoo minh; alaa heena yastaghshoona siyaabahum ya'lamu maa yusiroona wa maa yu'linoon; innahoo 'aleemum bizaatis sudoor

See how they fold their chests inward to hide from him. Yet even when they wrap themselves in their garments, he knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, he knows what is held within the chest.

Reflection

The chest appears at both ends of this verse, first as what people bend inward to shield and then as the place whose contents God knows. Commentators gave the folding two settings: Meccans who turned aside and drew their cloaks over their heads when the Prophet passed, or people ashamed to be uncovered even under the open sky. Either way the gesture treats being unseen as being hidden, and the verse replies by moving from sight to knowledge.
