Surah At-Tawbah — 9:50

in tusibka hasanatun tasu'hum; wa in tusibka museebatuny yaqooloo qad akhaznaaa amranaa min qablu wa yatawallaw wa hum farihoon

Sana bir iyilik gelince onların fenasına gider; bir kötülük gelse, "Biz önceden ihtiyatlı davrandık" derler, sevinerek dönüp giderler.

If good comes to you, it grieves them; and if misfortune strikes you, they say, "We took our precautions beforehand," and they turn away rejoicing.

Reflection

One verb carries both outcomes, aṣāba, to hit a mark, so good fortune and disaster arrive by the same motion, and the verse reads character from the outcome someone is glad to see. The hypocrites recast their staying behind as prudence with akhadhnā amranā, we had taken our affair in hand, a boast of foresight made over someone else's loss. The next verse keeps their verb, yuṣībanā, and ties whatever strikes to what God has already written for the believers.
