Surah At-Tawbah — 9:30

Q qaalatil yahoodu 'Uzairunib nul laahi wa qaalatin Nasaaral Maseehub nul laahi zaalika qawluhum bi afwaahihim yudaahi'oona qawlal lazeena kafaroo min qabl; qatalahumul laah; annaa yu'fakoon

The Jews say, 'Uzayr is the son of God,' and the Christians say, 'The Messiah is the son of God.' That is what they say with their mouths, echoing the words of those who denied before them. May God confound them — how are they so deluded?

Reflection

Arabic marks this saying as something carried by the mouth alone, with nothing received standing behind it, and that is the argument the whole passage is making about where religious authority comes from. Early commentators reported the claim about Uzayr of a particular group rather than of a whole community, and read the imprecation that follows as an Arabic idiom of rebuke closer to an exclamation than a curse.
