وَجُمِعَ ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ
Wa jumi'ash shamusu wal qamar
Gözün kamaştığı, ayın tutulduğu, güneş ve ayın bir araya getirildiği zaman, işte o gün insan: "kaçacak yer nerede?" der.
and the sun and the moon are brought together,
Two bodies set on courses that never meet are gathered into one place, which is as plainly as Arabic can say that the settled order of creation is finished. The verb stands singular where its subject is dual. Commentators have read the joining more than one way: both stripped of their light, or drawn together and flung away, and the surah leaves it at the image.
