Surah Al-A'raf — 7:41

Lahum min jahannama mihaadunw wa min fawqihim ghawaash; wa kazaalika najziz zaalimeen

They will have a bed of jahannam beneath them and coverings above them. This is how we repay the wrongdoers.

Reflection

The vocabulary here is domestic. Mihād is bedding, the word surah al-Nabaʾ uses for the earth spread out as a cradle beneath us, and ghawāsh are the coverings drawn over a sleeper. The furnishings of rest are what enclose them, above and below at once, and the line sits between the camel at the needle's eye and the ease promised to those who believe, so the surah sets two settled states side by side.
