Surah Al-A'raf — 7:30

فَرِيقًا هَدَىٰ وَفَرِيقًا حَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةُ ۗ إِنَّهُمُ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ أَوْلِيَآءَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُم مُّهْتَدُونَ

Fareeqan hadaa wa fareeqan haqqa 'alaihimud dalaalah; innahumut takhazush Shayaateena awliyaaa'a min doonil laahi wa yahsaboona annnahum muhtadoon

Allah insanlardan bir takımını doğru yola eriştirdi, fakat bir takımı da sapıklığı haketti, çünkü bunlar Allah'ı bırakıp şeytanları dost edinmiş ve kendilerini doğru yolda sanmışlardı.

One group he guided, and another had error fixed upon them — for they took the devils as allies instead of God, while believing themselves rightly guided.

Reflection

Arabic uses a verb of becoming rightfully due for the straying that settles on the second group, the word used of a debt or a sentence coming due, so the outcome reads as earned rather than assigned. The verse then ends on the group's own estimate of themselves, reckoning that they are guided, a condition that gives its holder no signal from inside. The sorting itself is done in the opening clause, two matched phrases, before any reason is offered.
