وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
Wa innaka la'alaa khuluqin 'azeem
Şüphesiz sen büyük bir ahlaka sahipsindir.
and you stand upon a magnificent character.
The charge answered here is madness, and the reply turns on conduct: the men pressing it had known this man since boyhood, and his manner among them was itself the evidence. Arabic sets him upon (ʿalā) his character, a preposition of standing on ground rather than of holding a quality. Early commentators glossed khuluq as dīn, the whole shape of a life, which widens the praise past good manners.
