De ki: "Gelin size Rabbinizin haram kıldığı şeyleri söyleyeyim: O'na hiçbir şeyi ortak koşmayın, anaya babaya iyilik yapın, yoksulluk korkusuyla çocuklarınızı öldürmeyin, sizin ve onların rızkını veren Biziz, gizli ve açık kötülüklere yaklaşmayın, Allah'ın haram kıldığı cana haksız yere kıymayın. Allah bunları size düşünesiniz diye buyurmaktadır."
Say: come, I will recite to you what your Lord has truly forbidden you. Associate nothing with him. Be good to your parents. Do not kill your children out of poverty — we provide for you and for them. Do not go near gross indecencies, whether open or hidden. And do not take the life God has made sacred, except by right. This he has charged you with, so that you may use your reason.
The list runs across three verses that close the same way, each ending on a different faculty: reason, then remembrance, then mindfulness of God. Within it, the line about killing children names poverty already present, while its parallel at 17:31 names the fear of it, and the two verses reverse the order of the pronouns in their promise of provision. Readers have long tied that reversal to which household is being addressed.
