Surah An-Najm — 53:24

أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ

Am lil insaani maa taman naa

Yoksa, her umduğu şey insanın mıdır?

Or shall the human have whatever he desires?

Reflection

Read alongside the verses around it, the wish in question is a specific one: the hope that the three named powers would secure a favourable outcome, since the passage moves straight on to intercession and whose permission it requires. Tamannā is the verb of wishing, the root behind umniyya, and it picks up the charge made two verses earlier about following what the lower selves desire. The answer given is a statement about ownership.
