وَلَوْ أَنَّ أَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱتَّقَوْا۟ لَكَفَّرْنَا عَنْهُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْ وَلَأَدْخَلْنَـٰهُمْ جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
Wa law anna Ahlal Kitaabi aamanoo wattaqaw lakaffarnaa 'anhum saiyiaatihim wa la adkhalnaahu Jannaatin Na'eem
Şayet kitap ehli inanıp karşı gelmekten sakınsalardı, kötülüklerini örterdik ve onları nimet cennetlerine koyardık.
If only the People of the Book had believed and been mindful, we would have wiped away their wrongs and brought them into the gardens of delight.
After several verses of indictment the address turns and offers terms, which is how this surah handles the community throughout: the charge and the open door arrive together. Kaffara is a covering over rather than an erasure, sharing its root with the word used just above for those who cover the truth. The verse after repeats the offer in worldly terms, so one condition is answered twice, once beyond death and once in the ground underfoot.
