إِنِّىٓ أُرِيدُ أَن تَبُوٓأَ بِإِثْمِى وَإِثْمِكَ فَتَكُونَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلنَّارِ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ جَزَٰٓؤُا۟ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
Inee ureedu an tabooo'a bi ismee wa ismika fatakoona min Ashaabin Naar; wa zaalika jazaaa'uz zaalimeen
Ben, hem benim hem de kendi günahını yüklenip cehennemliklerden olmanı isterim, zulmedenlerin cezası budur".
I would rather you carry both my sin and your own, and become one of the companions of the fire — that is the recompense of wrongdoers.'
The words are a preference stated under threat: to be the one wronged rather than the one who wrongs. Commentators have long asked how anyone may wish a sin onto another at all, given the rule that no burden-bearer carries another's, and many read the phrase as stating what would follow rather than asking for it. Ithmī is generally taken as the sin of killing him, set beside whatever the brother already carried.
