يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَسْـَٔلُوا۟ عَنْ أَشْيَآءَ إِن تُبْدَ لَكُمْ تَسُؤْكُمْ وَإِن تَسْـَٔلُوا۟ عَنْهَا حِينَ يُنَزَّلُ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ تُبْدَ لَكُمْ عَفَا ٱللَّهُ عَنْهَا ۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ حَلِيمٌ
yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo laa tas'aloo 'an ashyaaa'a in tubda lakum tasu'kum wa in tas'aloo 'anhaa heena yunazzalul Qur'aanu tubda lakum; 'afallaahu 'anhaa; wallaahu Ghafoorun Haleem
Ey İnananlar! Size açıklanınca hoşunuza gitmeyecek şeyleri sormayın. Kuran indirilirken onları sorarsanız size açıklanır (ama üzülürsünüz). Allah sorduğunuz şeyleri affetmiştir. Allah Bağışlayan'dır, Halim'dir.
You who believe, do not ask about things which, if disclosed to you, would distress you. But if you ask about them while the Qur'an is being revealed, they will be disclosed to you. God has pardoned that, and God is forgiving, forbearing.
God's silence on a matter counts here as something already granted: ʿafā ʿanhā, he has passed over them, so a gap in the law reads as deliberate rather than an oversight waiting to be filled. The tradition has divided over whether that restraint belonged only to the years revelation was still arriving, when one question could fix a ruling for everyone, or whether it holds now. Ḥalīm ends the verse where merciful usually stands: holding back a response while fully able to give it.
