Surah Ghafir — 40:10

Innal lazeena kafaroo yunaadawna lamaqtul laahi akbaru mim maqtikum anfusakum iz tud'awna ilal eemaani fatakfuroon

Those who denied will be called out: "God's loathing of you is greater than your loathing of yourselves now — for you were called to faith, and you refused."

Reflection

Maqt is the harshest word Arabic has for loathing, and the verse sets two of them side by side, the self-disgust the deniers feel in the fire and the divine loathing that met their refusal. Commentators tie the second to idh tudʿawna, the time when they were called to faith in the world, so the comparison runs across two moments. It follows straight on from the throne-bearers' prayer for the believers, so a plea for one group gives way at once to a summons to the other.
