Surah An-Nisa — 4:96

Darajaatim minhu wa maghfiratanw wa rahmah; wa kaanal laahu Ghafoorar Raheema

ranks of honor from him, and forgiveness, and mercy — and God is ever forgiving, merciful.

Reflection

The tremendous reward promised at the close of the previous verse is itemised here, and the itemising carries the point. Verse 95 gave those who strive a single degree above those who stay behind, while this line gives darajat in the plural, a shift commentators have read as deliberate: one degree among people now, many with God later. Forgiveness and mercy arrive attached to the ranks.
