وَوَهَبْنَا لِدَاوُۥدَ سُلَيْمَـٰنَ ۚ نِعْمَ ٱلْعَبْدُ ۖ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ
Wa wahabnaa li Daawooda Sulaimaan; ni'mal 'abd; innahoo awwaab
Davud'a Süleyman'ı bahşettik; o ne güzel bir kuldu! Doğrusu o daima Allah'a yönelirdi.
And we granted Dawud his son Sulayman — an excellent servant, ever turning back to God.
Awwāb, the epithet given here, is exactly what the surah said of Dawud a few verses earlier, so the son is introduced by his father's word. It also arrives before the two episodes that follow, the horses and the body on the throne, in which Sulayman is shown falling short and returning. The praise names a habit of coming back, a description that needs somewhere to come back from.
