Reflection

Pharaoh alone among the peoples listed here carries an epithet, dhu al-awtad, the one of the stakes, and it comes back for him once more in a later surah. Readers have taken the stakes for tent-pegs standing in for a dominion driven firmly in, for the stakes of a torture, and for the pyramids; the same word elsewhere describes mountains set as pegs of the earth. The list then closes by calling these peoples the factions, answering a taunt made three lines above.
