يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِۦ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ
Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanut taqul laaha haqqa tuqaatihee wa laa tamoontunna illaa wa antum muslimoon
Ey inananlar! Allah'tan, sakınılması gerektiği gibi sakının, sizler ancak müslüman olarak can verin.
You who believe, be mindful of God as he truly deserves to be held in awe, and do not die except in a state of surrender to him.
The bar this verse sets is God's full due, and early readers noticed at once that it exceeds what any person can produce. Some held that a later verse, asking for awareness of God to the extent of your capacity, replaces this one; others held that it explains this one, since a person's utmost is precisely the due. The second command concerns a moment nobody schedules, which turns it into an instruction about the present.
