فَإِنَّهُمْ عَدُوٌّ لِّىٓ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
Fa innahum 'aduwwwul leee illaa Rabbal 'aalameen
İbrahim: "Eski atalarınızın ve sizin nelere taptıklarınızı görüyor musunuz? Doğrusu onlar benim düşmanımdır. Dostum ancak Alemlerin Rabbidir. Beni yaratan da, doğru yola eriştiren de O'dur. Beni yediren de, içiren de O'dur. Hasta olduğumda bana O şifa verir. Beni öldürecek, sonra da diriltecek O'dur. Ahiret gününde yanılmalarımı bana bağışlamasını umduğum O'dur. Rabbim! Bana hikmet ver ve beni iyiler arasına kat.
they are all enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds,
Ibrahim calls carved objects enemies, which locates the harm in what they do to the person serving them rather than in anything they perform themselves. Readers have split over the exception: some take it as disconnected, since the one he excepts was never among the things being worshipped, others as connected, if his forefathers had worshipped God alongside their idols. From here the surah gives five verses of clauses naming what God actually does for him.
