Surah An-Nur — 24:33

And let those who cannot find the means to marry remain chaste until God enriches them from his bounty. And as for those whom your right hands rightfully hold who seek a contract of release, make the contract with them if you know there is good in them, and give them from the wealth of God that he has given you. And do not compel your young women into prostitution when they themselves wish to remain chaste, seeking the fleeting goods of this worldly life. And whoever compels them — then indeed, after their being compelled, God is forgiving, merciful.

Reflection

The mercy at the end is directed at the woman who was compelled, which is how most commentators have read the pronoun: the coercion is charged to whoever forced it, and she is met with forgiveness. On the contract of release earlier in the verse the tradition divided, some jurists reading the instruction as binding on the owner and others as strongly urged, and that disagreement stands. Both halves move toward the person with the least power in the arrangement.
