وَٱلْبُدْنَ جَعَلْنَـٰهَا لَكُم مِّن شَعَـٰٓئِرِ ٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ فِيهَا خَيْرٌ ۖ فَٱذْكُرُوا۟ ٱسْمَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْهَا صَوَآفَّ ۖ فَإِذَا وَجَبَتْ جُنُوبُهَا فَكُلُوا۟ مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُوا۟ ٱلْقَانِعَ وَٱلْمُعْتَرَّ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ سَخَّرْنَـٰهَا لَكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
Walbudna ja'alnaahaa lakum min sha'aaa'iril laahi lakum feehaa khairun fazkurusmal laahi 'alaihaa sawaaff; fa izaa wajabat junoobuhaa fakuloo minhaa wa at'imul qaani'a walmu'tarr; kazaalika sakhkharnaahaa lakum la'allakum tashkuroon
İşte kurbanlık deve ve sığırları Allah'ın size olan nişanelerinden kıldık. Onlarda sizin için hayır vardır. Bağlı halde keserken üzerlerine Allah'ın adını anın. Yan üstü düşüp ölünce onlardan yiyin, isteyene de istemeyene de verin. Şükredersiniz diye onları böylece sizin buyruğunuza verdik.
And the sacrificial camels — we have made them for you among the rites of God; in them is good for you. So mention the name of God over them as they stand in lines, and when their flanks fall to the ground, eat from them and feed the contented poor and the one who asks. Thus we have made them subject to you, that you may be thankful.
Budn are the large camels, and a camel is put down standing, so the word here is ṣawāff, drawn up in rows with a foreleg tied, and the moment the verse marks comes after the strike, when the flanks reach the ground. The two who are then fed are told apart by whether they ask: one holds back, the other comes forward. Commentators have assigned the two words both ways round.
