Surah Al-Baqarah — 2:43

وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱرْكَعُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ

Wa aqeemus salaata wa aatuz zakaata warka'oo ma'ar raaki'een

Namazı kılın, zekatı verin, rüku edenlerle birlikte rüku edin.

Establish the prayer, give the zakat, and bow with those who bow.

Reflection

A single word separates the third command from the first two: it asks for the act to be done in company, so who is present is part of what is asked. The address here is to a community that already had prayer of its own, and early commentators read the phrase as a call to join a particular congregation rather than to pray as such. The verse immediately after asks how people can instruct others in righteousness while forgetting themselves, which puts the instruction under a test.
