Surah Al-Baqarah — 2:256

Laaa ikraaha fid deeni qat tabiyanar rushdu minal ghayy; famai yakfur bit Taaghooti wa yu'mim billaahi faqadis tamsaka bil'urwatil wusqaa lan fisaama lahaa; wallaahu Samee'un 'Aleem

Dinde zorlama yoktur; Artık hak ile batıl iyice ayrılmıştır. Tağutu (saptırıcıları) inkar edip Allah'a inanan kimse, kopmak bilmeyen sağlam bir kulpa sarılmıştır. Allah işitendir, bilendir.

There is no compulsion in the way of life. Right guidance stands clear from error. Whoever rejects false power and believes in God has grasped the firmest handhold, one that will never break. And God is all-hearing, all-knowing.

Reflection

This follows immediately on the verse of the throne, where holding the heavens and the earth costs no weariness, and the image here is a hand closing on something. ʿUrwa is the loop on a water-skin or a bucket, the one part of it made to be gripped, and infiṣām is the word for a snapping apart of what was joined. What is asked of a person is the grip.
