فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ
Fa wai lul-lil mu salleen
Vay o namaz kılanların haline ki:
So woe to those who pray
The surah's charge lands on worshippers, which is what makes it sharp: it opens with the orphan pushed away and the poor left unfed, ends on small kindnesses withheld, and so weighs the prayer by everything standing around it. The preposition in the next line puts the heedlessness outside the prayer rather than inside it, and readers have long differed over how far that reaches.
