Quran verses about friendship

Choosing the company that lifts you

The people around us shape what we become. The Qur'an speaks often about company, about the hearts God draws together, and about the quiet difference between a friend who calls you toward what is good and one who leads you elsewhere.

These verses steady the person choosing whom to trust. They name the loyalty that outlasts hardship, the bond God Himself can place between former strangers, and the wisdom of staying near those who remember Him.

  • 49:10 — The believers are brothers, so make peace between your brothers, and be mindful of God, that you may be shown mercy.
  • 9:71 — The believing men and the believing women are protectors of one another: they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, they establish the prayer and give the alms, and they obey God and his Messenger. on these, God will have mercy. indeed, God is mighty, wise.
  • 5:2 — You who believe, do not violate the rites of God, nor the sacred month, nor the offerings, nor the garlanded animals, nor those making their way to the Sacred House seeking bounty and approval from their Lord. Once you leave the sanctified state, you may hunt. And do not let your hatred of a people — because they once barred you from the Sacred Mosque — drive you to transgress. Help one another in righteousness and God-consciousness, and do not help one another in sin and aggression. Be mindful of God; indeed, God is severe in punishment.
  • 18:28 — And hold yourself steady alongside those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking his face. Do not let your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornment of this worldly life. And do not obey the one whose heart we have made heedless of our remembrance, who follows his own desire, and whose affair has slipped into excess.
  • 3:103 — Hold fast, all together, to the rope of God, and do not be divided. Remember God's favor upon you: you were enemies, and he brought your hearts together, and by his grace you became brothers. You were on the brink of a pit of the fire, and he rescued you from it. So does God make his signs clear to you, that you may be guided.
  • 41:34 — Good and evil are not equal. Repel evil with what is better, and the one between you and whom there was enmity will become like a devoted friend.
  • 43:67 — Close friends on that day will be enemies to one another — except for those mindful of God.
  • 25:28 — Woe to me! If only I had never taken that one as a close friend.
