Quran verses about anger

When the heart burns and wants to strike

Anger arrives fast. It rises in the chest before you choose it, and it wants a target, a last word, a way to even the score. The Qur'an does not shame you for feeling it. It speaks instead to the moment just after, when the heat is real and you still hold the power to answer or to hold your tongue.

What follows are verses for that narrow window. They praise the ones who swallow their rage and pardon people, and they promise that repelling harm with kindness can soften an enemy into a friend. Read them slowly when your hands are still shaking, and let the choice return to you.

  • 3:134 — those who give in times of ease and in times of hardship, who restrain their anger and pardon people — and God loves those who do good.
  • 42:37 — those who shun the gravest sins and indecencies, and who forgive even when they are angry,
  • 41:34 — Good and evil are not equal. Repel evil with what is better, and the one between you and whom there was enmity will become like a devoted friend.
  • 7:199 — Be forgiving, urge what is right, and turn away from the ignorant.
  • 3:159 — It was by a mercy from God that you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh and hard of heart, they would have scattered from around you. So pardon them, ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the matter. Then, once you have resolved, place your trust in God — indeed, God loves those who place their trust in him.
  • 16:126 — If you retaliate, retaliate only with the like of what was inflicted on you. But if you are patient, that is better for those who are patient.
  • 42:43 — But whoever is patient and forgives — that is among the matters requiring true resolve.
  • 24:22 — And let not those of you blessed with bounty and abundance swear off giving to their relatives, the needy, and those who emigrated in the path of God. Let them pardon and overlook. Do you not love that God should forgive you? And God is forgiving, merciful.
