Surah At-Tawbah — 9:16

Or did you think you would be left alone before God has known which of you struggle and take no intimate ally apart from God, his Messenger, and the believers? God is fully aware of what you do.

Reflection

Walija occurs only here, naming something slipped inside a body it does not belong to, so the tie ruled out is the concealed one. Testing is then described with a particle meaning not yet, attached to God's knowing, and the commentators met that by reading it as knowledge brought into the open where it can be witnessed. The verse thereby makes struggle the thing that produces the evidence.
