لَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلَنَا بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ وَأَنزَلْنَا مَعَهُمُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمِيزَانَ لِيَقُومَ ٱلنَّاسُ بِٱلْقِسْطِ ۖ وَأَنزَلْنَا ٱلْحَدِيدَ فِيهِ بَأْسٌ شَدِيدٌ وَمَنَـٰفِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَلِيَعْلَمَ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَنصُرُهُۥ وَرُسُلَهُۥ بِٱلْغَيْبِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِىٌّ عَزِيزٌ
Laqad arsalnaa Rusulanaa bilbaiyinaati wa anzalnaa ma'ahumul Kitaaba wal Meezaana liyaqooman naasu bilqist, wa anzalnal hadeeda feehi baasun shadeedunw wa manaafi'u linnaasi wa liya'lamal laahu many yansuruhoo wa Rusulahoo bilghaib; innal laaha Qawiyyn 'Azeez
We sent our messengers with clear proofs, and we sent down with them the scripture and the balance, so that people may uphold justice. And we sent down iron, in which is great force and benefits for humankind — so that God may know who supports him and his messengers in the unseen. Indeed, God is strong, mighty.
The surah takes its name from a word that appears in it only here. Scripture and the balance arrive together with the messengers, which puts revelation and the plain instrument of fair measure on the same footing; iron then follows as the thing that can defend justice or destroy it. Commentators have long differed over anzalnā for iron — whether it describes an actual descent or is the usual idiom for anything given from God.
