Surah Al-Hadid — 57:13

Yawma yaqoolul munaa fiqoona walmunaafiqaatu lillazeena aamanun zuroonaa naqtabis min noorikum qeelarji'oo waraaa'akum faltamisoo nooran faduriba bainahum bisooril lahoo baab, baatinuhoo feehir rahmatu wa zaahiruhoo min qibalihi-'azaab

On that day the hypocrites, men and women alike, will say to those who believed, "Wait for us, that we may take from your light." It will be said, "Go back behind you and seek out a light." Then a wall will be set between them, with a gate: inside it is mercy, and outside, facing them, is the torment.

Reflection

Unẓurūnā can mean wait for us or look at us, and commentators kept both, the second picturing the hypocrites asking the believers to turn so the light on their faces falls across them. The reply sends them back behind them, which many read as a return to the world where light could be earned, the one place now closed to them. Some commentators identify the wall with al-aʿrāf, the heights that give Surah al-Aʿraf its name.
