Surah Al-Jathiyah — 45:15

Maa 'amila saalihan falinafsihee wa man asaaa'a fa'alaihaa summa ilaa Rabbikum turja'oon

Whoever does good, it is for their own self; and whoever does evil, it is against it. Then to your Lord you will be returned.

Reflection

Two prepositions do the work of this verse: li for what accrues to a person, ʿalā for what falls on them. The second half names no noun of its own and takes its pronoun back from the nafs in the first, so the good and the harm land on the same self. Its placement follows an instruction to forgive, which leaves the reckoning with the one who earned it.
