Men stand for women through what God has given to each over the other, and through what they spend of their wealth. So the righteous women are devout, guarding in their husbands' absence what God would have them guard. As for those from whom you fear estrangement, counsel them, withdraw from them in bed, and part from them. Then if they respond to you, seek no path against them. Indeed, God is ever exalted, great.
The same root that names the condition here, nushuz, describes a husband's conduct at 4:128 later in this surah, so the word covers both sides of a marriage. Daraba, the verb in the third clause, carries a wide range across the Qur'an, from striking to setting out to travel to putting forth a parable, and the tradition has read this occurrence in more than one of those senses. The verse after it moves the matter to arbiters drawn from both families.
