Chapter 23 of the Qur'an · “The Believers” · 118 verses · revealed in Makkah
23:1 قَدْ أَفْلَحَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَThe believers have truly succeeded:
23:2ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى صَلَاتِهِمْ خَـٰشِعُونَthose who are humble in their prayer,
23:3وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ ٱللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَand who turn away from idle talk,
23:4وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِلزَّكَوٰةِ فَـٰعِلُونَand who give the purifying alms,
23:5وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـٰفِظُونَand those who guard their private parts
23:6إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَexcept with their spouses or those whom their right hands rightfully hold — for in this they are not to be blamed.
23:7فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَbut whoever seeks beyond that — they are the ones who transgress —
23:8وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَand those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenants,
23:9وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَوَٰتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَand those who guard their prayers faithfully —
23:10أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْوَٰرِثُونَthose are the inheritors
23:11ٱلَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ ٱلْفِرْدَوْسَ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَthose who will inherit the firdaws, where they will remain forever.
23:12وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن سُلَـٰلَةٍ مِّن طِينٍAnd we created the human being from an extract of clay.
23:13ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ نُطْفَةً فِى قَرَارٍ مَّكِينٍthen we placed him as a drop of fluid in a secure lodging,
23:14ثُمَّ خَلَقْنَا ٱلنُّطْفَةَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقْنَا ٱلْعَلَقَةَ مُضْغَةً فَخَلَقْنَا ٱلْمُضْغَةَ عِظَـٰمًا فَكَسَوْنَا ٱلْعِظَـٰمَ لَحْمًا ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَـٰهُ خَلْقًا ءَاخَرَ ۚ فَتَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقِينَThen we made the drop into a clinging clot, and we made the clot into a lump of flesh, and we made the lump into bones, and we clothed the bones with flesh, and then we brought it forth as another creation. So blessed is God, the best of creators.
23:15ثُمَّ إِنَّكُم بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ لَمَيِّتُونَThen, after all that, you will surely die.
23:16ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ تُبْعَثُونَThen, on the day of resurrection, you will be raised up.
23:17وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعَ طَرَآئِقَ وَمَا كُنَّا عَنِ ٱلْخَلْقِ غَـٰفِلِينَAnd we created seven paths above you, and we have never been heedless of creation.
23:18وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءًۢ بِقَدَرٍ فَأَسْكَنَّـٰهُ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰ ذَهَابٍۭ بِهِۦ لَقَـٰدِرُونَAnd we sent down water from the sky in measure and settled it in the earth — and we are surely able to take it away.
23:19فَأَنشَأْنَا لَكُم بِهِۦ جَنَّـٰتٍ مِّن نَّخِيلٍ وَأَعْنَـٰبٍ لَّكُمْ فِيهَا فَوَٰكِهُ كَثِيرَةٌ وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَAnd with it we brought forth for you gardens of date palms and vines, in which there is abundant fruit for you, and from which you eat,
23:20وَشَجَرَةً تَخْرُجُ مِن طُورِ سَيْنَآءَ تَنۢبُتُ بِٱلدُّهْنِ وَصِبْغٍ لِّلْـَٔاكِلِينَAnd a tree that springs from Mount Sinai, yielding oil and relish for those who eat.
23:21وَإِنَّ لَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ لَعِبْرَةً ۖ نُّسْقِيكُم مِّمَّا فِى بُطُونِهَا وَلَكُمْ فِيهَا مَنَـٰفِعُ كَثِيرَةٌ وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَAnd in the livestock there is truly a lesson for you. We give you to drink from what is in their bellies, and you have many benefits in them, and from them you eat.
23:22وَعَلَيْهَا وَعَلَى ٱلْفُلْكِ تُحْمَلُونَAnd on them and on ships you are carried.
23:23وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦ فَقَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرُهُۥٓ ۖ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَAnd we sent Nuh to his people, and he said, "My people, worship God — you have no god other than him. Will you not be mindful?"
23:24فَقَالَ ٱلْمَلَؤُا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦ مَا هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُرِيدُ أَن يَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لَأَنزَلَ مَلَـٰٓئِكَةً مَّا سَمِعْنَا بِهَـٰذَا فِىٓ ءَابَآئِنَا ٱلْأَوَّلِينَBut the chiefs of his people who denied said, "This is only a human being like yourselves, wanting to set himself above you. Had God willed, he would have sent down angels. We never heard of this from our forefathers of old.
23:25إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا رَجُلٌۢ بِهِۦ جِنَّةٌ فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍHe is only a man afflicted with madness, so wait and see what becomes of him for a while.
23:26قَالَ رَبِّ ٱنصُرْنِى بِمَا كَذَّبُونِHe said, "My Lord, help me, for they have called me a liar."
23:27فَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ أَنِ ٱصْنَعِ ٱلْفُلْكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا وَوَحْيِنَا فَإِذَا جَآءَ أَمْرُنَا وَفَارَ ٱلتَّنُّورُ ۙ فَٱسْلُكْ فِيهَا مِن كُلٍّ زَوْجَيْنِ ٱثْنَيْنِ وَأَهْلَكَ إِلَّا مَن سَبَقَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلْقَوْلُ مِنْهُمْ ۖ وَلَا تُخَـٰطِبْنِى فِى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓا۟ ۖ إِنَّهُم مُّغْرَقُونَSo we revealed to him: build the ship under our eyes and by our inspiration. Then when our command comes and the oven gushes forth, load into it a pair of every kind, two by two, and your family — except those against whom the word has already gone forth. And do not plead with me for those who have done wrong; they are to be drowned.
23:28فَإِذَا ٱسْتَوَيْتَ أَنتَ وَمَن مَّعَكَ عَلَى ٱلْفُلْكِ فَقُلِ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِى نَجَّىٰنَا مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَAnd when you and those with you are settled on the ship, say, 'Praise be to God, who delivered us from the wrongdoing people.'
23:29وَقُل رَّبِّ أَنزِلْنِى مُنزَلًا مُّبَارَكًا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْمُنزِلِينَAnd say, 'My Lord, bring me to a blessed landing, for you are the best of those who bring to shore.'
23:30إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍ وَإِن كُنَّا لَمُبْتَلِينَIn that are signs indeed, and we have always been the one who tests.
23:31ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ قَرْنًا ءَاخَرِينَThen, after them, we brought forth another generation.
23:32فَأَرْسَلْنَا فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِّنْهُمْ أَنِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرُهُۥٓ ۖ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَAnd we sent among them a messenger from their own people, saying, "Worship God — you have no god other than him. Will you not be mindful?"
23:33وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِهِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِلِقَآءِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَأَتْرَفْنَـٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا مَا هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يَأْكُلُ مِمَّا تَأْكُلُونَ مِنْهُ وَيَشْرَبُ مِمَّا تَشْرَبُونَAnd the chiefs of his people who denied and rejected the meeting of the hereafter — those to whom we had granted ease in the life of this world — said, "This is only a human being like you. He eats from what you eat and drinks from what you drink.
23:34وَلَئِنْ أَطَعْتُم بَشَرًا مِّثْلَكُمْ إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَّخَـٰسِرُونَIf you obey a human being like yourselves, you will surely be the losers.
23:35أَيَعِدُكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ إِذَا مِتُّمْ وَكُنتُمْ تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَنَّكُم مُّخْرَجُونَDoes he promise you that when you have died and become dust and bones, you will be brought forth again?
23:36۞ هَيْهَاتَ هَيْهَاتَ لِمَا تُوعَدُونَFar, far-fetched is what you are promised!
23:37إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنْيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحْيَا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَبْعُوثِينَThere is nothing but our life in this world — we die and we live, and we will not be raised again.
23:38إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا رَجُلٌ ٱفْتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا وَمَا نَحْنُ لَهُۥ بِمُؤْمِنِينَHe is nothing but a man who has invented a lie about God, and we will never believe him.
23:39قَالَ رَبِّ ٱنصُرْنِى بِمَا كَذَّبُونِHe said, "My Lord, help me, for they have called me a liar."
23:40قَالَ عَمَّا قَلِيلٍ لَّيُصْبِحُنَّ نَـٰدِمِينَGod said, "Before long, they will be filled with regret."
23:41فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ غُثَآءً ۚ فَبُعْدًا لِّلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَSo the blast seized them in truth, and we reduced them to wreckage. Away with the wrongdoing people!
23:42ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ قُرُونًا ءَاخَرِينَThen after them we brought forth other generations.
23:43مَا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَNo community can outrun its appointed time, nor can they delay it.
23:44ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلَنَا تَتْرَا ۖ كُلَّ مَا جَآءَ أُمَّةً رَّسُولُهَا كَذَّبُوهُ ۚ فَأَتْبَعْنَا بَعْضَهُم بَعْضًا وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ أَحَادِيثَ ۚ فَبُعْدًا لِّقَوْمٍ لَّا يُؤْمِنُونَThen we sent our messengers in succession. Every time a messenger came to a community, they denied him, so we made them follow one another, and we turned them into tales. Away with a people who will not believe!
23:45ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَأَخَاهُ هَـٰرُونَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَسُلْطَـٰنٍ مُّبِينٍThen we sent Musa and his brother Harun with our signs and clear authority,
23:46إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦ فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا عَالِينَto Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they grew arrogant — they were a haughty people.
23:47فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَنُؤْمِنُ لِبَشَرَيْنِ مِثْلِنَا وَقَوْمُهُمَا لَنَا عَـٰبِدُونَThey said, "Are we to believe two mortals like ourselves, when their people are servants to us?"
23:48فَكَذَّبُوهُمَا فَكَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْمُهْلَكِينَSo they denied them both, and were among those destroyed.
23:49وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَهْتَدُونَAnd we gave Musa the scripture, so that they might be guided.
23:50وَجَعَلْنَا ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَأُمَّهُۥٓ ءَايَةً وَءَاوَيْنَـٰهُمَآ إِلَىٰ رَبْوَةٍ ذَاتِ قَرَارٍ وَمَعِينٍAnd we made the son of Maryam and his mother a sign, and we gave them refuge on a high ground, a place of rest with flowing springs.
23:51يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلرُّسُلُ كُلُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ وَٱعْمَلُوا۟ صَـٰلِحًا ۖ إِنِّى بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ عَلِيمٌMessengers, eat from what is wholesome and act righteously. I am well aware of what you do.
23:52وَإِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦٓ أُمَّتُكُمْ أُمَّةً وَٰحِدَةً وَأَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمْ فَٱتَّقُونِThis community of yours is one community, and I am your Lord, so be mindful of me.
23:53فَتَقَطَّعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَهُم بَيْنَهُمْ زُبُرًا ۖ كُلُّ حِزْبٍۭ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ فَرِحُونَBut they tore their affair into pieces among themselves, each faction rejoicing in what it holds.
23:54فَذَرْهُمْ فِى غَمْرَتِهِمْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍSo leave them in their confusion for a time.
23:55أَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّمَا نُمِدُّهُم بِهِۦ مِن مَّالٍ وَبَنِينَDo they think that in the wealth and sons we provide them
23:56نُسَارِعُ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ ۚ بَل لَّا يَشْعُرُونَthat we are rushing to give them every good thing? No — they have no perception.
23:57إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ خَشْيَةِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَIndeed, those who stand in awe of their Lord,
23:58وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ يُؤْمِنُونَand those who believe in the signs of their Lord,
23:59وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِرَبِّهِمْ لَا يُشْرِكُونَand those who ascribe no partners to their Lord,
23:60وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَآ ءَاتَوا۟ وَّقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ رَٰجِعُونَand those who give what they give with trembling hearts, knowing they are returning to their Lord —
23:61أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُسَـٰرِعُونَ فِى ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ وَهُمْ لَهَا سَـٰبِقُونَsuch are the ones who race toward good deeds, and they are foremost in reaching them.
23:62وَلَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۖ وَلَدَيْنَا كِتَـٰبٌ يَنطِقُ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَAnd we burden no soul beyond its capacity, and with us is a record that speaks the truth — and they will not be wronged.
23:63بَلْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فِى غَمْرَةٍ مِّنْ هَـٰذَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَـٰلٌ مِّن دُونِ ذَٰلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَـٰمِلُونَBut their hearts are submerged in heedlessness of this, and they have other deeds, besides, which they keep doing —
23:64حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَخَذْنَا مُتْرَفِيهِم بِٱلْعَذَابِ إِذَا هُمْ يَجْـَٔرُونَUntil, when we seize their affluent ones with the punishment, they cry out for help.
23:65لَا تَجْـَٔرُوا۟ ٱلْيَوْمَ ۖ إِنَّكُم مِّنَّا لَا تُنصَرُونَDo not cry out today — no help will come to you from us.
23:66قَدْ كَانَتْ ءَايَـٰتِى تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنتُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَعْقَـٰبِكُمْ تَنكِصُونَMy signs were recited to you, but you turned back on your heels,
23:67مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِۦ سَـٰمِرًا تَهْجُرُونَarrogant toward it, talking through the night with empty, dismissive words.
23:68أَفَلَمْ يَدَّبَّرُوا۟ ٱلْقَوْلَ أَمْ جَآءَهُم مَّا لَمْ يَأْتِ ءَابَآءَهُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَHave they not reflected on the word? Or has something come to them that did not come to their forefathers?
23:69أَمْ لَمْ يَعْرِفُوا۟ رَسُولَهُمْ فَهُمْ لَهُۥ مُنكِرُونَOr is it that they do not recognize their Messenger, and so they reject him?
23:70أَمْ يَقُولُونَ بِهِۦ جِنَّةٌۢ ۚ بَلْ جَآءَهُم بِٱلْحَقِّ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ لِلْحَقِّ كَـٰرِهُونَOr do they say he is possessed? No — he has brought them the truth, and most of them are averse to the truth.
23:71وَلَوِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلْحَقُّ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ لَفَسَدَتِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَن فِيهِنَّ ۚ بَلْ أَتَيْنَـٰهُم بِذِكْرِهِمْ فَهُمْ عَن ذِكْرِهِم مُّعْرِضُونَIf the truth had followed their desires, the heavens and the earth and all who are in them would have fallen into ruin. Indeed, we have brought them their reminder, yet from their reminder they turn away.
23:72أَمْ تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ خَرْجًا فَخَرَاجُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ ۖ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَOr are you asking them for some payment? The provision of your Lord is better, and he is the best of providers.
23:73وَإِنَّكَ لَتَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍAnd indeed, you call them to a straight path.
23:74وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ عَنِ ٱلصِّرَٰطِ لَنَـٰكِبُونَAnd those who do not believe in the hereafter are surely straying from the path.
23:75۞ وَلَوْ رَحِمْنَـٰهُمْ وَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِم مِّن ضُرٍّ لَّلَجُّوا۟ فِى طُغْيَـٰنِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَEven if we showed them mercy and lifted the harm that afflicts them, they would still persist in their tyranny, wandering blindly.
23:76وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَـٰهُم بِٱلْعَذَابِ فَمَا ٱسْتَكَانُوا۟ لِرَبِّهِمْ وَمَا يَتَضَرَّعُونَAnd we seized them with punishment, yet they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humble themselves in prayer.
23:77حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًا ذَا عَذَابٍ شَدِيدٍ إِذَا هُمْ فِيهِ مُبْلِسُونَUntil, when we opened upon them a gate of severe punishment, they were plunged into despair.
23:78وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنشَأَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرَ وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَIt is God who brought into being for you hearing, sight, and hearts — yet how little you give thanks.
23:79وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى ذَرَأَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَAnd it is he who scattered you across the earth, and to him you will be gathered.
23:80وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ وَلَهُ ٱخْتِلَـٰفُ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَAnd it is he who gives life and causes death, and to him belongs the alternation of night and day. Will you not then reason?
23:81بَلْ قَالُوا۟ مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ ٱلْأَوَّلُونَNo — they say the same as those before them said.
23:82قَالُوٓا۟ أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَThey say, "When we are dead and have become dust and bones, will we really be raised again?
23:83لَقَدْ وُعِدْنَا نَحْنُ وَءَابَآؤُنَا هَـٰذَا مِن قَبْلُ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّآ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَWe have been promised this before, we and our forefathers. This is nothing but tales of the ancients.
23:84قُل لِّمَنِ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَن فِيهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَSay: "To whom belongs the earth and all who are in it, if you know?"
23:85سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ ۚ قُلْ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَThey will say, "To God." Say, "Will you not then take heed?"
23:86قُلْ مَن رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ ٱلسَّبْعِ وَرَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِSay: Who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the magnificent Throne?
23:87سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ ۚ قُلْ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَThey will say, "To God." Say, "Will you not then be mindful?"
23:88قُلْ مَنۢ بِيَدِهِۦ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ وَهُوَ يُجِيرُ وَلَا يُجَارُ عَلَيْهِ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَSay, 'In whose hand is the dominion of all things, who grants protection while none can be protected against him — if you truly know?'
23:89سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ ۚ قُلْ فَأَنَّىٰ تُسْحَرُونَThey will say, "To God." Say, "Then how are you so deluded?"
23:90بَلْ أَتَيْنَـٰهُم بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَNo — we have brought them the truth, and they are surely liars.
23:91مَا ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ مِن وَلَدٍ وَمَا كَانَ مَعَهُۥ مِنْ إِلَـٰهٍ ۚ إِذًا لَّذَهَبَ كُلُّ إِلَـٰهٍۭ بِمَا خَلَقَ وَلَعَلَا بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ ۚ سُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَGod has taken no son, nor is there any god alongside him. Were that so, each god would have made off with what he created, and some would have risen over others. Glory be to God, far above what they ascribe to him.
23:92عَـٰلِمِ ٱلْغَيْبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ فَتَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَKnower of the unseen and the seen — far exalted is he above what they associate with him.
23:93قُل رَّبِّ إِمَّا تُرِيَنِّى مَا يُوعَدُونَSay: my Lord, if you should show me what they are promised,
23:94رَبِّ فَلَا تَجْعَلْنِى فِى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَmy Lord, do not place me among the wrongdoing people.
23:95وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّرِيَكَ مَا نَعِدُهُمْ لَقَـٰدِرُونَAnd indeed, we are able to show you what we have promised them.
23:96ٱدْفَعْ بِٱلَّتِى هِىَ أَحْسَنُ ٱلسَّيِّئَةَ ۚ نَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَصِفُونَRepel evil with what is better. We know best what they ascribe.
23:97وَقُل رَّبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَٰتِ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِAnd say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in you from the promptings of the devils,
23:98وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَن يَحْضُرُونِAnd I seek refuge in you, my Lord, lest they come near me.
23:99حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَ أَحَدَهُمُ ٱلْمَوْتُ قَالَ رَبِّ ٱرْجِعُونِUntil, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back,
23:100لَعَلِّىٓ أَعْمَلُ صَـٰلِحًا فِيمَا تَرَكْتُ ۚ كَلَّآ ۚ إِنَّهَا كَلِمَةٌ هُوَ قَآئِلُهَا ۖ وَمِن وَرَآئِهِم بَرْزَخٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَso that I may do good in what I left behind." No — it is only a word he speaks. Behind them stands a barrier until the day they are raised.
23:101فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَلَآ أَنسَابَ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَلَا يَتَسَآءَلُونَWhen the trumpet is blown, no ties of kinship will remain between them that day, nor will they ask after one another.
23:102فَمَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَThose whose scales are heavy — they are the ones who succeed.
23:103وَمَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ خَسِرُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ فِى جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدُونَAnd those whose scales are light — they are the ones who have lost their souls, abiding in jahannam forever.
23:104تَلْفَحُ وُجُوهَهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَهُمْ فِيهَا كَـٰلِحُونَThe fire will scorch their faces, and they will be there with lips drawn back in a grimace.
23:105أَلَمْ تَكُنْ ءَايَـٰتِى تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنتُم بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ"Were my signs not recited to you, and yet you kept denying them?"
23:106قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا شِقْوَتُنَا وَكُنَّا قَوْمًا ضَآلِّينَThey will say, "Our Lord, our wretchedness overcame us, and we were a people gone astray.
23:107رَبَّنَآ أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْهَا فَإِنْ عُدْنَا فَإِنَّا ظَـٰلِمُونَOur Lord, bring us out of it. If we return to wrong, then we are truly wrongdoers.
23:108قَالَ ٱخْسَـُٔوا۟ فِيهَا وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونِGod will say, "Stay there in disgrace, and do not speak to me.
23:109إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْ عِبَادِى يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَٱرْحَمْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَIndeed, there was a group among my servants who said, 'Our Lord, we believe, so forgive us and have mercy on us, for you are the best of those who show mercy.'
23:110فَٱتَّخَذْتُمُوهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا حَتَّىٰٓ أَنسَوْكُمْ ذِكْرِى وَكُنتُم مِّنْهُمْ تَضْحَكُونَBut you took them as a joke until they made you forget my remembrance, and you used to laugh at them.
23:111إِنِّى جَزَيْتُهُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ بِمَا صَبَرُوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ هُمُ ٱلْفَآئِزُونَToday I have rewarded them for their patience — they are the ones who have truly triumphed.
23:112قَـٰلَ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ عَدَدَ سِنِينَGod will say, "How many years did you remain on earth?"
23:113قَالُوا۟ لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ فَسْـَٔلِ ٱلْعَآدِّينَThey will say, "We stayed a day, or part of a day — ask those who keep count."
23:114قَـٰلَ إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ۖ لَّوْ أَنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَHe will say, "You stayed only a little — if only you had known.
23:115أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ عَبَثًا وَأَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا تُرْجَعُونَDid you think we created you for nothing, and that you would not be returned to us?
23:116فَتَعَـٰلَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْكَرِيمِExalted is God, the True King. There is no god but he, Lord of the Noble Throne.
23:117وَمَن يَدْعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ لَا بُرْهَـٰنَ لَهُۥ بِهِۦ فَإِنَّمَا حِسَابُهُۥ عِندَ رَبِّهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَWhoever calls upon another god alongside God, having no proof for it, his reckoning rests with his Lord alone. Indeed, those who deny will not succeed.
23:118وَقُل رَّبِّ ٱغْفِرْ وَٱرْحَمْ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَAnd say, "My Lord, forgive and have mercy, for you are the best of those who show mercy."
