Surah Al-Hajj — 22:57

Wallazeena kafaroo wa kazzaboo bi Aayaatinaa fa ulaaa'ika lahum 'azaabum muheen

But those who denied and rejected our signs — for them is a humiliating punishment.

Reflection

This closes a triad that opened with the hour arriving without warning: doubt first, then judgment, then the two verdicts. The believers get the longer clause and the gardens; this verse gets one clause, and what it specifies is muhīn, a punishment measured in standing. Sovereignty was just said to belong to God on that day, which is what puts status at stake.
