Surah Al-Hajj — 22:47

Wa yasta'juloonaka bil'azaabi wa lany yukhlifal laahu wa'dah; wa inna yawman 'inda Rabbika ka'alfi sanatim mimmaa ta'uddoon

They press you to hasten the punishment, but God will never break his promise. A single day with your Lord is like a thousand years by your reckoning.

Reflection

Respite frames this verse on both sides: three lines earlier the deniers are given rope before the seizing, and the line just after says the same of towns left to run on in wrongdoing. Between them, the demand for speed is met with a measure of time nobody here holds. The thousand years names a scale, and the commentators are split on it, some hearing an idiom for vastness and some a stated span, with the fifty thousand of 70:4 set alongside.
