Surah Al-Baqarah — 2:77

Do they not know that God knows what they conceal and what they declare?

Reflection

Yusirrūn and yuʿlinūn are a matched pair, concealing and declaring, and the Qur'an uses them together often enough that they function as a way of saying everything without listing anything. The verse is short and takes the form of a question, so it supplies no new charge and instead removes the assumption the previous scene rested on. Its placement immediately after that scene is what gives it force.
