ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُم مِّن بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ فَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ لَكُنتُم مِّنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
Summa tawallaytum mim ba'di zaalik; falawlaa fadlul laahi 'alaykum wa rahmatuhoo lakuntum minal khaasireen
Then, even after that, you turned away. Were it not for God's grace upon you and his mercy, you would have been among the losers.
Tawallaytum is a verb of turning the back, a bodily image for what follows an agreement just made. The verse is built as a counterfactual, naming grace and mercy as the only reason the outcome was not total, which makes it the passage's gentlest line. It sits immediately after the covenant scene, so the turning it describes happens with the mount still in view.
