Surah Al-Baqarah — 2:62

Innal lazeena aamanoo wallazeena haadoo wan Nasaaraa was Saabi'eena man aamana billaahi wal yawmil aakhiri wa 'amila saalihan falahum ajruhum 'inda Rabbihim wa laa khawfun 'alayhim wa laa hum yahzanoon

Indeed, those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabeans — whoever believes in God and the last day and does righteous work — they have their reward with their Lord, and no fear will come upon them, nor will they grieve.

Reflection

This verse has carried more weight in later argument than almost any other in the surah. Its plain sense extends the reward to the named communities on three conditions, and commentators divided sharply over whether it stands as it reads or is qualified by later verses about the final message. Both positions are old and neither has ever been settled by consensus.
