Surah Al-Baqarah — 2:47

Yaa banee Israa'eela uzkuroo ni'matiyal lateee an'amtu 'alaykum wa annee faddaltukum 'alal 'aalameen

Children of Israel, remember the favor I bestowed upon you, and that I favored you above all peoples.

Reflection

The address turns direct here, naming its audience for the first time in the passage and opening the long recitation of favours that runs to the end of the section. Commentators divided over the scope of the preference: some read it as favour over the peoples of that age, others as favour without limit, and the difference matters because the very next verse removes any advantage it might be thought to secure.
